Therapy for Adults with ADHD

in-person and virtual in Virginia

Does it feel like no matter how hard you try you just can’t get it together?

Maybe you had another panicked morning, rushing to get to work before your boss notices how late you are or perhaps you forgot your anniversary or your kid’s birthday for the third year in a row. You may be struggling to complete your day to day activities like brushing your teeth, or simply keeping your house clean. What’s worse, is that you know that you can do all of these things because you used to manage them and some days you still do. You find yourself frustrated and feeling ashamed wondering, what the heck is wrong with me?

It doesn’t matter if you were diagnosed years ago or not at all, the important thing is that you are noticing the impact of ADHD in your day to day life:

  • The systems that used to work for you aren’t as effective

  • Your relationships with partners, friends, and family are suffering

  • You feel more and more shame that you can’t function like you used to

  • Your emotions feel all over the place and often outside of your control

I want to help you feel calm, connected, and in control.

ADHD focused therapy helps you better understand your brain and the accommodations that it needs to feel successful.

It helps you process and leave behind the guilt and self-doubt that builds over years of hearing that you are “too much” or “not paying attention” or “don’t care”.

It moves you through the shame of not being able to meet “normal” standards without running yourself into the ground. It helps you recover from the burnout and build a life that works with your brain instead of against it.

Where are you at in your journey?

I was diagnosed as a kid…

But it feels like the tools I used to survive school don’t translate to adult life especially without all the structure and boundaries that school provided. I’m tired of the old deficit focused model. Every time I turn around I’m faced with what I’m doing wrong. I’m ready to feel good about myself again.

I was just recently diagnosed….

But now I don’t know what to do next! I thought getting an “official” diagnosis would give me answers and it feels like it has just opened up new questions. Not to mention all the feelings surfacing as I realize just how overlooked all my symptoms were in childhood.

I’ve never been diagnosed…

But everything I’ve seen and heard about ADHD really resonates for me and I am struggling with adult life. Maybe I’ve had a few people suggest ADHD to me, maybe I’ve just secretly pondered it on my own. Perhaps I was labeled “gifted” as a kid but don’t know how that translates to adulthood.

I’ll help you through this process, tailoring each step to your unique needs and circumstances. Sometimes using a diagnostic label like “ADHD” can help inform therapy, but I’m not interested in simply slapping a label on you and following a cookie cutter treatment plan. So whether the “ADHD” label resonates for you or you prefer something less specific like “neurodivergent” (or neuro-spicy!), my focus is helping you build a life where you thrive. My approach comes from a place of unconditional positive regard - just because you haven’t brushed your teeth in a week doesn’t make you a bad person. You are deserving of just as much kindness, compassion and support as anyone else.

You deserve to feel peace.

FAQs

  • There is no standard answer for this! Some folks find that they only need a few sessions to kickstart their success. Others can spend 9 months, 12 months (or longer) diving in. There is no minimum or maximum requirement.

  • I always start with a check-in to make sure that I am prioritizing whatever is on your mind that day. I don’t ever want someone to leave a session feeling like they couldn’t bring something up because I was too heavily directing the conversation. Some sessions focus on processing feelings and self-exploration. Other sessions focus on identifying and navigating barriers.

  • A standard session is 50 minutes because that typically gives us enough time to tackle a manageable amount. However, I do both shorter and longer sessions depending on you! We will meet either weekly or every other week depending on your preference and schedule. I encourage starting with weekly sessions for the first 4-6 weeks if possible because it helps us establish a relationship and dive in faster!
